The area is a location in Wakiso District, Central Uganda. It is a suburb of Kampala bordered by Kabowa to the north, Najjanankumbi and Makindye to the northeast, Munyonyo to the east, Kaazi to the southeast, Kajjansi to the south, Nakigalala to the west and Buddo to the west. It is a fast growing new residential district about 11 km south of central Kampala just off the Entebbe Road. There are marvelous views of the lake from several parts of the hill.
Traffic & Transportation
If you live in Lubowa and work in the centre of town, you are advised to avoid the morning and evening rush hours in order to stay sane. The Entebbe Road is notorious and you might well find yourself spending several hours a day in your car. For the same reason people living in Lubowa are probably not inclined to go to town very often in the evening. (Outside the rush hours a trip to town may take only 20 – 30 minutes.)
Should you not have your own personal vehicle or driver, you could take mattatos (local mini-buses). It costs roughly 1,500 UGX for a ride into Kampala. However, be ware that they make several stops along the way. For the adventurers there are several Boda Boda (motor bike) stations set up in and around Lubowa, the Quality Shopping Market and the main road intersection on Entebbe Road.
You find brand new houses offering you the opportunity develop your own garden. (Things grow fast in Uganda.) If you aren’t keen on gardens, there are apartments and so-called town houses. There are also estates – walled compounds, some with common facilities such as swimming pools and gyms.
Here the air is still fresh and clean and as the area it is not yet completely built up, you can go walking in the countryside nearby.
Although it is a residential area in the making, Lubowa already has a shopping centre with a large well stocked supermarket, a couple of cafés and restaurants, a beauty clinic and several clothes shops. Moreover, a brand new shopping mall – the Freedom City – has opened on the Entebbe Road just after the last roundabout on your way out of Kampala. The first businesses to move in are several banks, but some of the big stores such as Shoprite are following soon. From Lubowa you have also reasonably easy access to the shopping centres on Gaba Road, close to the American Embassy.
The American Recreation Club in Makindye which is a 20 – 30 minute drive away offers a range of social and sporting activities. If you’re looking for a little luxury, the Serena hotel chain has the Lake Victoria Serena Resort off the Entebbe Road about 20 minutes away. Besides two restaurants, the hotel has a large swimming pool and health club. A marina and golf course are on the drawing board. Also off the Entebbe Road, about 20 minutes away, is Palms Golf Club with a 9 hole course. In Entebbe itself there is a long established club with an attractive 18 hole course. There are many roads leading down to the lake along the Entebbe Road, making it a very attractive area for birdwatchers. Sailors and would-be sailors may like to join the Kazi Sailing Club at the lake about 30 minutes from Lubowa.
The International School of Uganda is located in Lubowa and this is one reason for choosing to live there. (The school has a bus service for children living in other parts of town.)
